PROF. MEHMET GÖRMEZ I OPENING COURSE MAQASID WORKSHOP AT MARDIN ARTUKLU UNIVERSITY

Mehmet Görmez spoke at the opening lecture of “the Development and Methodological Analysis of the Idea of Maqasid” workshop which was taken place on the 4th of January at Mardin Artuklu University’s Faculty of Islamic Sciences, and he presented a course of action about maqasid and its possibility of becoming a separate science.

Mehmet Görmez started his speech with the question: “Is maqasid a topic of usul and usul al-fiqh or is it a separate science which has its own methodology?” With this question, he pointed out the presence of a long-lasting discussion in the Islamic World. He said that two scholars, Al-Shatibi and Al-Tahir ibn Ashur, studied maqasid as a separate science in the history of Islam. He indicated that Al-Shatibi paved the way for the separation of the maqasid by declaring the necessity of constructing general fundamentals presenting a certainty after excluding usul al-fiqh from the Islamic theories. He also added that Al-Tahir ibn Ashur recognized with all aspects the necessity of studying maqasid as a separate science in modern times.

Görmez shared that he also developed an opinion on this subject as a result of his own readings, that maqasid deserves to be studied as a separate science. He highlighted the fact that, when the research that is done in both the history of Islamic Sciences and usul, and the scientific data which has been put forward since the last century about maqasid with the help of the ten-volume source have been evaluated together as a whole, maqasid should be studied as a separate methodology.

Besides, he reminded the importance of teaching maqasid as a separate science in the course syllabuses at faculties of Islamic Sciences.

Görmez continued his speech by presenting a course of action which utilizes Islamic inheritance of thought and includes ontological, epistemological, theological, and axiological dimensions to construct maqasid as a separate science.

In order to achieve this, he introduced these two multi-staged steps to follow:

As the first step, he emphasized that we need to study maqasid which prioritizes the maqasid al-tashri under five main titles, which are maqasid al-takwinmaqasid al-tanzilmaqasid al-tashri/shariamaqasid al-taklif, and maqasid al-uluminstead of degrading it only to the maqasid al-takwin or maqasid al-sharia.

As the second step, he stated that the field called the maqasid of tashri/sharia needs to be recreated around twelve titles as an important part of maqasid and these titles are: fiqh al-kulliyahfiqh al-mizanfiqh al-awlawiyyat, fiqh al-mealat, takhrij al-furu ala al-usul, fiqh al-kawaid, ashbah and nazair, furuk, ta’lil al-ahkam, ilm al-asrar wa al-hikma, tahliq al-maqasid, and terhim al-ahkam.
